Tooth-Colored Dental Fillings by Comfortable Care Dentistry
In an effort to provide our patients with the most natural looking treatments as possible, we offer tooth-colored filings made of composite resins. A silicon dioxide-filled, tooth-colored plastic mixture, composite resins can restore teeth to an attractive, healthy state and are a popular alternative to silver or amalgam fillings of the past.
Dental fillings are used to repair minimal tooth fractures, tooth decay or cavities just like silver amalgam fillings. Tooth-colored fillings are matched to the color of your existing teeth and are virtually unnoticeable. As white fillings have become more attractive and the dangers of amalgam fillings have become more publicized, more and more patients are having their cavities filled with natural looking tooth-colored fillings.
Replacing Silver Amalgam Fillings
As the availability of tooth-colored fillings is becoming clear to patients, many are choosing natural colors for their cavity fillings. In addition to this, many patients are opting for the removal of their amalgam fillings as well. Helping patients get rid of their unsightly silver fillings and replacing them with tooth-colored composite fillings is just another way we help to keep you smiling.
There has been evidence that suggests that mercury, a component of silver amalgam fillings, has been shown to be more toxic than lead, cadmium, or arsenic. The thought of mercury leaking from fillings and causing health issues is obviously a problem we'd like our patients to avoid. Although there is much debate in the dental world regarding this research we would rather be on the safe side and promote healthy, natural looking treatments.
The other advantage to tooth-colored fillings is that the composite bond actually supports the remaining tooth structure, deterring breakage and insulating against temperature changes. The medium and small composites last as long as amalgam fillings, up to seven to ten years. The composite filings are also less invasive, allowing us to keep more of your natural tooth structure intact than amalgams. We believe that the more natural tooth structure you keep the better teeth you'll likely have in the future.
